Today is Dhanteras which marks the first day or the beginning of the 3 day Diwali or Deepavali festival in India. This day also happens to be the birthday of Lord Dhanvantari, who is known as the father of Ayurveda.
We all know that the real wealth is our health and so today is a good day to pray for our physical health and also emotional and spiritual well-being. Our body, mind and spirit are like a triangle and only when they are in balance we reflect health and happiness and the principles of Ayurveda go a long way in showing us how to bring about this balance.
Today, Hari and I made some delicious laddus with dry fruits. This is a non gas recipe and that's why it is a great recipe to make with kids. It is sugar free and has all the natural sugars from the dry fruits making it very healthy.
This is a great snack when you want an instant burst of energy, so it is a good snack to have on hand for those times when you might want to reach out for some junk food. Keeping healthy foods on hand is the best way to eliminate the consumption of junk food which leads to so many diseases in the long run and also brings down immunity.
Protecting our immunity is vital in these pandemic times and these laddus or energy balls are very nourishing and satisfying and will surely prevent you from eating unhealthy snacks. This is a great recipe to make throughout the year!
Diwali is a time when a lot of sweets and dry fruits are distributed and if you are left with a lot of dry fruits, you can make these delicious laddus out of them.
I have taught how to make these delights in many of my workshops and masterclasses and everybody loves them!
Have a great Deepavali everyone! Enjoy all the festivities with your loved ones and nourish yourselves with all the food and love that you can put together!

Sugar free Date and Nut Laddus | Energy Balls Recipe
Dried fruits and nuts give a quick burst of energy with these simple and delicious treats.
Ingredients:
2 cups black soft dates, pitted
2 cups nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, peanuts)*
2 tbsp raisins
1 tbsp gardencress seeds, roasted (optional)
1 tsp pure vanilla extract or ½ tsp cardamom powder
dry or dessicated coconut for rolling the laddu (optional)
Method:
Remove the seeds from the dates. In a blender put in the nuts of your choice and pulse until powdered. Add the dates and vanilla or cardamom and blend again. Form into balls.
*Use an assortment of nuts or just a single type of nut to make these energy balls.
Notes: gardencress seeds: These seeds can be used when there is weakness, to tackle aches and pains, when one is recuperating or simply to add more energy to life. They are best had 2 to 3 times a week as more than that can increase the heat or pitta in the body. When the seeds are boiled in milk, the pitta properties are balanced.
Although these seeds are good for the post natal period they are best avoided during pregnancy. If you are a expecting a baby, just skip the seeds and make laddus with just dates and nuts for an instant energy boost. According to Ayurveda, these seeds are good for Vata and Kapha disorders.
